Mary S. Kessler, age 82 of Appletree Drive, died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Mid Coast Senior Health Care Center after a brief illness. She was born in Greenville, S.C. on January 7, 1925, the daughter of Colonel John H. and Florence M. Allen Starr. She was a direct descendant of William Brewster. She grew up in Hamilton, New York, where her father was a Professor of Physical Education at Colgate University. She graduated from Hamilton Central High School and attended college at George Washington University and the University of Rhode Island. During World War II, she served in the Pentagon as a civilian attached to the Military Intelligence Service, Unit X (MIS-X), and after the war, she was a special assistant to the publisher of Appleton Croft. In 1946, Mary married Richard J. Kessler, LCDR, U.S. Navy. He died in 1973. From 1979 to 2007 she was married to Robert S. Day. She had been an active Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer with CASA in Maine and Rhode Island. She also enjoyed a lifelong attachment to the Moosehead Lake Region at her family lodge on the lake, Aquiden Lodge, where she fly fished and trolled. Mrs. Kessler was active in St. Mary's Church, Portsmouth, R.I., to which she was elected as the first female member of the vestry, and served on the vestry of St.Paul's Episcopal Church in Brunswick. She was a Delegate to Rhode Island Limited Constitutional Convention, the Diocese of Rhode Island and the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. She was elected to the School Board of the Portsmouth, R.I. school system and became its first female chairperson where she was instrumental in the construction of the Portsmouth High School and the Middle School. She also was elected to the Newport County Vocational School Committee and was a member of the Newport Art Association and Redwood Library. She was an avid world traveler, visiting her grandchildren in Washington, Zagreb, Geneva, Nairobi, and London. She had lived in Brunswick since 1986 coming from Portsmouth, R.I. Mary is predeceased by a sister, Joan S. Cornwell. Surviving are her four sons, Dr. Richard J. Kessler of Chevy Chase, MD; Thomas S. Kessler of Harpswell, Maine; Robert D. Kessler of Hope Idaho, and Conrad Peter J. Kessler of London, England; her daughter, Sarah J. Kessler of Virginia Beach, VA; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at a date later to be announced. Interment will be at St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Portsmouth, R.I.
