Son of Robert Merriam (1738 - 1782) and Miriam Allen Merriam (1742 - 1808).

He was born after his father's death. His father died on May 1, 1782, and he was born in September. Thus, his mother was about 5 months pregnant at the time of her husband's death. He was his widowed mother's seventh son.

It may be presumed that his mother and siblings were supported by family members and/or their local community, as three of his older siblings were born blind.

Because his siblings' disability, eventually their father's real estate went to the sixth son, his older brother Nathan, who settled the estate in 1801.

Joseph Merriam married Clara "Clarissa" Hudson. It was said that they were married for 68 years, and in that case they were married as teenagers.

In August, 1829, Joseph Merriam bought an acre of land in rural Upper Canada, in an area known as Stamford Township, near the location of the Battle of Lundy's Lane. This area is present-day Niagara Falls, Ontario. He and his wife raised their family there, where their family business was cabinet making. Eventually, in the 1860s, he and his wife moved to be with their grown children and many grandchildren in Conneaut, Ashtabula county, Ohio. Both he and his wife are listed in the 1861 Canada census for Welland county, Ontario.

His siblings were:
-Joseph (1763-1777)
-Azubah (1765-1814), the only sister; born blind; she was unmarried.
-Hezekiah (1767-1814), born blind; he was unmarried.
-Solomon (1771-1771)
-Robert (1772-1839)
-Rufus (1774-1808), born blind; he was unmarried.
-Nathan (1775-1855), who inherited his father's real estate, and settled his father's estate with the other heirs in 1801. He relocated to Covington, Wyoming county, New York State, where he farmed until his death.

Husband of Clara or Clarissa Hudson Merriam (1787-1869). He was a cabinet maker.

Father of eight, but he outlived four of his children:
-Edward Brown (died at age 11)
-Caroline Eliza/Elizabeth (married name: Beach)
-Sarah Maria (married name: Stevenson)
-Henry Douglas (died at age 2)
-John Henry/Hudson
-James Hervey [a cabinet maker, and later in life he was an undertaker]
-Edward Douglas [a medical doctor]
-Charles Wesley [a traveler, he died in London on his way back from Australia]

He died at the home of his son, Dr. Edward Douglas "E.D." Merriam, on March 13, 1866, as reported in the March 15, 1866 edition of the Conneaut Report, the weekly newspaper.

Joseph Merriam's headstone is quite worn, and simply states "Grandfather".
