1912 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
Son of James Lloyd Abbot Jr. and Amelia Lyon (Ross) Abbot; grandson of J.L. and Amanda (Blake) Abbot, Maj. William Henry Ross and Mary Amanda (Lyon) Ross.
Great-grandson of Samuel Parkman Blake, 1st cousin of Francis Parkman who wrote "The Oregon Trail."
His grandfather J.L. Abbot's second wife Caroline Desha Barney was an aunt of Alva Vanderbilt.
His great-grandfather Francis Strother Lyon succeeded his own uncle Col. George Strother Gaines as the head of the Alabama Banking System. Another uncle was Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines.

In 1915, Capt. Abbot's widowed mother needed him to return home to run the family business, so he traded his commission in the regular Navy for one in the reserves and became president of the Abbots' Sunnyvale Nurseries.

He married Helen Buck Taylor, daughter of Mobile mayor Richard Vipon and Helen (Buck) Taylor. She was the granddaughter of Margaret Langdon Buck, a close friend of Mrs. Frank Crawford Vanderbilt, wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt and step-grandmother of William K. Vanderbilt who married Caroline Desha Barney Abbot's niece Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont.

Capt. J.L. Abbot died in the east wing of the Roberts-Taylor house, 910 Government Street, Mobile, two weeks before his 100th birthday.
