Elijah Allen Chase, son of George Portland Chase and Susan Catherine Borders Chase, was born in Chippewa County, Minnesota, on a farm (nearest town was Kerkhoven in Swift County just a few miles north). Around 1908, Elijah's parents moved their family back to Iowa, where he lived most of his life, farming.

He married Lillian Rosaline Dobson on March 10, 1924. They had eight children, Verna, Virvel, Velma, Vearl, Vera, Vivian, Vernon, and Victor.

Within a couple years after being married, they moved to Webster County, Iowa, farming until 1955.

One year after retiring from the farm, Elijah and Lillian moved to Port Hueneme, California in 1956. Five of their eight children were already living in Ventura County at that time. He and Lillian lived in Port Hueneme for the remainder of their lives.
