The homecoming memorial service for John T. Bolerjack, retired U.S. Army warrant officer, will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Blackwell Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m. with the Revs. Andy Jobe and John Randell officiating.
Interment will be at New Zion Cemetery in Davenport at 2:30 p.m. following the memorial service. Military rites will be performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.
John T. Bolerjack was born April 21, 1920, in Chandler, the son of Francis Otto and Bertha McMurtry Bolerjack and died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the age of 84. He attended rural schools across Oklahoma, Mulhall High School in Mulhall and Hills Business College in Oklahoma City.
John volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1940 and was assigned to the 18th Horse-drawn Field Artillery Unit in Lawton. In 1942, he volunteered for jump school and, on completion of this, was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. He made four invasions in Europe during World War II — two by boat and two by parachute. In Nijmegan, Holland, he earned the Bronze Star for bravery. He stayed in the 82nd Airborne Division until 1949, making 60 parachute jumps. In 1952, he served with the 29th Infantry Regiment in Korea.
In 1957, he volunteered for missile school in El Paso, Texas. After finishing this course, he was assigned as a crewman and later an instructor with the Nike/Ajax Missile units. He retired from the U.S. Army at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., in 1962.
John and Areline Shroff were married Aug. 13, 1947, in Oklahoma City. They lived on various military posts around the country, from coast to coast and border to border. After John retired from the Army, they moved to Oklahoma City, where he worked at the Aeronautical Center at Will Rogers Field, retiring again in 1977.
John and Areline then lived at Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma for seven years and then traveled full time with a travel trailer for three and a half years. In 1987, they moved to Enid and lived there until they moved to Blackwell in 1998. While living in Enid, John was a volunteer driver for OKDHS, traveling about 50,000 miles for them.
He is survived by his wife, Areline; two sons, John Bolerjack Jr. of Midwest City and James Bolerjack and his wife Bonnie of Blackwell; two granddaughters, Lydia Cook and Elisabeth Shelton; one great-granddaughter; one brother, the Rev. Francis Bolerjack of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; and one sister, Eunice Shafer of Greenacres, Wash. Also many nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
John was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Blackwell.
Casket bearers will be Lee Cooperrider, Jerry Elliott, Mathew Estell, Henry Hofen, Tommy Nealis and Leroy Major.
