Floyd R. Hare, age 87, formerly of the Fillmore and Wykoff area, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at the Ostrander Care and Rehab Center in Ostrander.

He was born Feb. 13, 1922, in rural Spring Valley to Charles R. Hare and Amy (Smith) Hare, and attended Zion Rural School through the eighth grade. He worked for area farmers for a number of years before he entered the United States Army on Feb. 19, 1943, and served with the 754th Tank Battalion in the Philippines during WWII. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, The Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Arrow Head. He was discharged on Dec. 27, 1945.

After returning to the States he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Mary Moon on Feb. 3, 1950, in Preston and together had three children: Eugene, Denise and Sandra.

Over the years he was employed at Libby McNeil and Libby, John Deere in Charles City, Iowa, and then as a superintendent for Leon-Joyce Construction. After 33 years of employment at Leon-Joyce he worked as a foreman in the oil fields of North Dakota. He returned to the Wykoff area and worked for Freeman Construction until his retirement.

Floyd was a member of the Eagles Club in Rochester, American Legion Post 0369, and the 49ers.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of the Ostrander Care Center; two daughters, Denise (Gary) Schwartz of Wykoff and Sandra Hare Kern of Wykoff; a daughter-in-law, Sue Thompson; seven grandchildren, Tanya Drewes, Joleen Schwartz, Amanda Himli, Tyler Thompson, Jesse Kern, Amy Schwartz and Bridget Kern; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Hare of Mountain Home, Idaho; and two sisters, Eunice Trent of Iowa and Lucille Poeppel of Plainview. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Eugene David Hare, three great-grandchildren, six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 25, at The Fillmore Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Hopper officiating. Burial will be in the Fillmore Cemetery, with military rites by the Wykoff American Legion and the Spring Valley American Legion and VFW.

Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
