Nicolas Roos was born to Matthias and Katherine (Engle) Roos in Igel, in the Trier-Saarburg district, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. When he was about 11, his family moved to North America, first taking up residence in Quebec, in the lakes region northeast of Ottawa. There he married Mary Lucinda Worley, and started their family, which would grow to include 15 children, 10 of whom would live to adulthood.

Nicolas moved his family from Canada in spring 1881 to Scipio, Kansas, to work as a carpenter of the Carmelite Monastery. In 1885 they moved on to Ottawa, Kansas, where Nicolas went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. He applied for US citizenship in 1892.

He and Mary Lucinda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1920, and she died four years later. Nicolas died 8 years later at the age of 85.
