Settled in Marshall Co., Lacon, Illinois. In 1870 he married Ida (sic) Bachman and 1871 they drove here in a wagon with four horses, accompanied by his family and William Kort. They took up a homestead where he lived until his death, January 10, 1923.
It was here he saw the wild herds of buffalo and antelope roam over the prairies. He saw the big snow storm of Jan. 12, 1888 and the great grasshopper plague and the hard times of 1894-95. He watched the great tribes of Indians pass by along the Blue river in the early days.

August 30, 1882 he married Tomke Johnson of Crete, Nebr. and three children were born also of this union, two boys - John and Simon and one girl, Ida. John died December 19, 1904 at the age of 19 years. April 11, 1914 Mrs. Gerloff died, and Mr. Gerloff remained on the old homestead with Simon and Ida until his death. In July, 1915 he suffered a stroke of Paralysis, whereby his whole left side was rendered almost helpless. On New Years Day he took sick and was in bed until he died, January 10, 1923.
