Paul Henri Spaak was born in Schaarbeek (Brussels) on 25 January 1899. He studied law at the University of Brussels. After his studies he became an elected deputy in 1932 for the Belgian Labour Party. During his National Political career Paul Henri Spaak became three times Prime Minister of Belgium. During World War II, wich he spent in exile in London, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Government of Belgium.
Spaak was elected as the first President of the United Nations General Assembly (in office during 1946-1947).
In 1956 he was chosen as Secretary General by the council of N.A.T.O, an office he held from 1957 until 1961.
Paul Henri Spaak was also a supporter of European co-operation. His role in the creation of the E.E.C earned him a place among the founding fathers of European Union together with Konrad Andenauer, Joseph Bech, Johan Beyen, Alcide De Gasperi, Jean Monet and Robert Schuman.
In 1961 Spaak received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President John Kennedy for his contribution to World peace.
Paul Henri Spaak retired from politics in 1966 and died in 1972 aged 73.
