Spaak was elected as the first President of the United Nations General Assembly (in office during 1946-1947).
In 1956 he was chosen as Secretary General by the council of N.A.T.O, an office he held from 1957 until 1961.
Paul Henri Spaak was also a supporter of European co-operation. His role in the creation of the E.E.C earned him a place among the founding fathers of European Union together with Konrad Andenauer, Joseph Bech, Johan Beyen, Alcide De Gasperi, Jean Monet and Robert Schuman.
In 1961 Spaak received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President John Kennedy for his contribution to World peace.
