In 1884, she went to Dakota Territory took up a homestead joining her brother, also a tree claim. She was on her claim enough to prove up at the end of five years and the tree claim in eight years. While on the claim she fed an occasional Indian who had strayed from the reservation. While returning to Ohio she was stricken with rheumatism which crippled her for life.
