Aaron Guilford Ames was the second of nine children born to Daniel Ames (1814-1865) and Mary Elizabeth Guilford Ames (1818-1877) of Lynn, Essex Co., MA. During the Civil War, Ames saw service in the 4th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers, Co. B. Before the war Ames was employed as a teamster in Lynn. After the war he worked as a leather cutter in the city's leather and shoe industry.

Ames married twice. His first wife was Nancy Rand Oliver (1840-1872), daughter of John and Sally Oliver of Lynn. They were married in Lynn on June 17, 1857. Following Nancy's early death from consumption, Ames married her younger sister, Priscilla Louisiana Oliver (1844-1917). They were married in Lynn on January 23, 1874. By his first wife, Ames had five children: Charles Warren (b. 1860), Arthur G. (b. 1863), Ella Frances (b. 1866), Etta Leona (b. 1869), and Flora T. (b. 1870). By his second wife he had four children: Addie May (b. 1874), Arthur Wesley (b. 1877), Bertha Florence (b. 1879), and Grace Ethel (b. 1882).

Ames died at the age of sixty-three. (His full age was recorded as 63 years, 4 months and 18 days.) The cause of death was elaborately attributed to "exhaustion and embolism, result of a remote traumatic injury of the lymphatus & blood vessels & its repeated inflammation."
