Funeral services for John Mortimer Wise, 88, of Elko, SC will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Edisto Baptist Church [Williston, SC] with burial in the Blackville [Town] Cemetery.
The Reverend Floyd Dukes will be officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, November 20th from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M. at Folks Funeral Home, Williston,SC. Mr. Wise passed away at his home [about 9:00 A. M.].
Born in Barnwell County, SC, he was the son of Marion Wroe Wise and Anna Pearl Walker Wise. Mr Wise left Clemson College in 1940 to volunteer for military service. He served in the U. S. Army until 1945 participating in Operation Overlord & then in operations in France, Belgium, & Germany until the war's end. Mr. Wise was a farmer. He was a member of Elko Baptist Church & attended Edisto Baptist Church.
Surivors include his wife, Madge Gandy Wise, daughters Susan Wise James and Dr. Alison Wise Lockhart and her husband, David B Soper, all of Columbia, SC, and a son, John Marion Wise and his wife Meagen ["Meg" Henney] Wise of Canaan, CT, grandchildren Anna Carrigan Lockhart, Mary Alexandra Lockhart, Mary Elizabeth Wise, Margaret Caroline Wise, John Ashton Wise, and James Augustus Wise.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna [Marion] Wise Sullivan and her husband, William A Sullivan,[and step-mother, Eunice Turner Wise.]
