His grandfather, a Baptist minister, started both a church and school there. His father passed away when Loyd was fourteen months old. He served in the CCC for eighteen months, first in Pryor, OK and then in Oroville, CA. After leaving the CCC in 1937, Loyd went to work for a petroleum company in California. While there he was drafted into the U.S. Navy . World War II ended while he was still in boot camp, so he was released from military service and returned to his job with Signal Oil and Gas Co. He worked there for twenty-six years, driving and loading tank trucks and serving as a transporation superintendant. He was married while in California, and had three children. In 1976 he moved to Tahlequah, OK, working at Masters Hardware until retirement.
Loyd attended First United Methodist Church in Tahlequah. He enjoyed raising vegetables in his garden and making pasteries, and he liked to travel. He loved to spend time with his family, and many of his friends and family members spent his 90th birthday with him.
