Mr. Abraham Dies At 84

George Abraham, 84, of Bremond, former Wacoan and longtime Bremond merchant, died Wednesday morning, October 22 in a Marlin hospital.

A wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bremond. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bremond with Rev. B.J. Zientek and Rev. Michael Krol as celebrants.

Graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Mr. Abraham was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and came to the United States with his parents when he was 3. The family settled near Hillsboro. In 1916, he moved to Waco and operated a grocery store until 1917. He married Sophie Kocian of West July 29, 1919, in West.

The couple moved to Bremond where Mr. Abraham opened the Abraham Cotton Gin and Feed and Produce Store, which he operated more than 40 years. He retired in 1959, but remained active in his ranching business.

Mr. Abraham was a charter member of the Bremond City Council and had served as councilman 31 years. He helped organize the Bremond Fire Department and was a member of Bremond Independent School District board of education.

He was county commissioner of Precinct 4 in Robertson County for eight years. He operated the Green Wrap Tomato Shed in Bremond several years.

He was an Army veteran of World War I and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bremond, Knights of Columbus Council 5053 in the St. Casimor Lodge in Bremond and was a past member of Waco Syrian Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Sam Abraham and Steve Abraham, both of Bremond; daughter, Mrs. Joe (Joanna) Johnston of Mesquite; four sisters, Miss Sue Abraham and Miss Frieda Abraham of Waco, Mrs. Helen Oliver of Waco and Sister Rose Anne of Bishop Dunne Convent in Dallas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were: Sammy Abraham, Kenneth Abraham, Dennis Abraham, Johnny Abraham, Michael Dysart and Ted Kocian.

Kotch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
