Al was a civil engineer, born in North Dakota and migrated to California. He was the Loving husband of Nina Bell Brown Johnston and father of son, Jay Johnston.
W A Johnston worked for the California Division of Highways Design Office in Marysville, CA until his retirement in 1969. (Al and Nina were married in Oakland, CA. April 15, 1945.)

Survivors include his wife, Nina Johnston, son, Jay Johnston of Yuba City, CA and a sister, Claire Johnston Baugh of Los Angeles, CA

Al loved to hunt pheasant in Sutter County and fish for salmon in the Feather River near Yuba City.

Al was a gifted musician and played plectrum banjo in several groups in Sutter and Yuba Counties. One band included, Al Johnston, banjo, Ray Dolsey, accordion or banjo and Billy Roberts, rhythm guitar. The band was known as "the three bars". In later years Al suffered with glaucoma. He was a great man and a loyal friend.
