Alton-- Elvira Jospehine, daughter of Adam and Alma Kemp Gilliland, was born near Anderson Creek June 2, 1862, and died at the Guthrie Convalescent Home in Louisville in her ninety first year. Her mother died when she was only a few weeks old, leaving her and a two-year-old sister, Charity. The paternal grand-mother took Charity, who only lived to be 8 years old. Ella Kemp, the other grandmother, of near Beechwood, reared Josephine. Her father married again and there were three children, Noah, Amy Werneke and Addie Dugan, of Brandenburg, but at this time there whereabouts are unknown. On October 12, 1876 she married Milton Filmore Pearson, of near Alton who preceded her in death in March 1946. To this union was born a son, who lived only a short time; a daughter, Jessie, who died at the age of 12, and another daughter, Mattie Lee Williams, Who survives. Her early life was spent near Beechwood, but after the death of the daughter, they moved to Alton in 1889. The other daughter was born and reared here. For the last several years, she has been in failing health and has spent the winters with her daughter in Louisville. On April 20, she broke her hip when she fell. Compilations developed which finally claimed her life. Interment was in Flower Point cemetery October 24, beside her husband.
