Giuseppe Orecchia was born and raised in Castello di Annone, Piemonte, Italy.

His Parents:

*Father: Giovanni Battista Orecchia, 1844-1924
*Mother: Teresa Rossi, 1851-1896

Siblings: (The ones I know of)

*Caterina (Keti), Married name Molino, never left Italy

*Antonia, 1873-1938, never left Italy

*Lucia 1885-1984, married name Grana, never left Italy

*Emerinsiana Isabella, 1887-1984, married name Rossi. Lived in Calif.

*Paolo (Paul) 1889-1959. Lived in Calif.

*Gerolamo (Jerome) 1896-1985. Lived in Calif.

Giuseppe's family would suffer the tragic loss of their mother Teresa in 1896 when she died during childbirth. She was pregnant with twins and she and one of the twins died, the twin that survived was Gerolamo (Jerome). His older sister Keti, who was nursing her own baby at the time, then nursed Gerolamo. She and her sisters took over the job of taking care of their baby brother.

Interesting to note that twins were common in the Orecchia family. Giuseppe would have twins and his sister Keti also had twins.

Giuseppe grew up in Annone and was trained in the shoe making trade. He immigrated to the USA around the year 1906. He settled in Alameda, CA and worked as a shoemaker.

Later in 1911 he returned to the hometown of Annone and married Luigia Grana on Oct. 5, 1911.
The Orecchia family was very close with the Grana family in Annone, Giuseppe and his brother Paolo would marry Grana family girls and Giuseppe's sister Lucia would marry a Grana son, Antonio Grana.

Giuseppe also arranged to have his younger sister Emerinsiana (Siani) come back with him and Luigia to the USA. Giuseppe's good friend Umberto Rossi had asked him to find a bride for him. The newly wed couple and Emerinsiana then moved back to CA on Oct. 24, 1911 and in 1912 ,in Alameda, Luigia gave birth to twins; a boy and a girl. At that time they lived on San Jose Ave.

And sister Emerisiana married Mr. Rossi.

And as was the Italian Custom the Orecchia twins were named after their grandparents:

*Giovanni Battista Orecchia
*Giovanna Teresa Orecchia

Later the twins dropped their Italian first names and went by John B. Orecchia and Nina O. Pene (married name)

The family would move to San Mateo, CA where Giuseppe would open and run his own shoe repair business, the "San Mateo Shoe Repairing"

Giuseppe was a hard working family man who enjoyed spending time with his twins. He also loved music and was a semi-pro musician and would make extra money playing at Italian social events.

Sadly Giuseppe would die in Oct. 1917 at the young age of 34. He suffered from a kidney disease called "Cronic Glomerular Nephritis". He had taken very ill and was brought to St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco on Oct. 24th. He would be treated there for one week and would pass away on Oct. 31, 1917. I have included a photo of his death certificate.
On Nov. 3rd he was buried at Italian Cemetery in Colma.

Giuseppe's brother Paolo had been there to help Giuseppe during his final hours and would attend to the funeral arangements for his brother.

This was a tough blow to the family as the twins were only 5 years old.

After Giuseppe's death Luigia and the twins received lots of help from both the Orecchia and the Grana families. Giuseppe's younger brother, Paolo (Barba Polucio) became a father figure to John, they were very close.
My father always said how much his "Barba" helped him cope with the loss of his father.

Paolo would name his firstborn child after Giuseppe. Paolo's daughter would be born in less than 2 months (Dec. 1917) and she was named Giuseppina in his brother's honor.

Younger brother Paolo (Barba Polucio) and his wife Isabella (Nena Blini) were so important in helping Giuseppe's family survive after his death and we can't thank them enough for all that they did.

Barba Polucio was the role model that his nephew Giovanni (John) would pattern his own life after. Both had that tremendous family loyalty and generostiy.
