Abel was a lawyer in Forsythe, Wisconsin with William A. Bugh, with whom he also served in the army. He enlisted on April 18, 1861 as a Corporal, mustering into "G" Co. Wisconsin 5th Infantry. He was wounded August 10, 1862 near Roanoke, Virginia. He died as a result of those wounds on August 12, 1862 at Philadelphia, PA.
