John Yancy Criswell, Sr. was born in 1786, possibly in Knox Co., KY. In 1831, he moved his wife and eight kids to Texas by way of Missouri. He was promised land in Austin's Colony but when he got there he was forced to go to Matagorda where he obtained land and the next year he was able to move to Fayette County. His two sons, Leroy and William fought in the "Come and Take It" battle of the Texas Revolution and William fought in the battle of San Jacinto and is buried in the State Cemetery.

John Y. Criswell, age 44, applied at San Felipe de Austin; received 1 league (4428.4 acres) in Matagorda County, 15 June 1831.
