Capt. Nathan Leonard/Lenord/Lenard was born 25 Sep 1744 in Hardwick, Worcester, MA to Ens. Ezra Leonard (1711-98) and Olive Smith (1713-98). On 26 Nov 1766 he married Amattai Cutler. Nathan served as a minuteman at the Lexington Alarm in 1775 and commanded a company in Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment in Worcester County, MA in 1778.

The Leonard Family. — Nathan Leonard was the original settler on the Joab Clift farm. The Leonard's came from Shaftsbury, Vt., in 1795. Nathan Leonard brought with him from Vermont eight children: Joseph, Nathan, Benjamin, Luther, Calvin, Ezra, Cutler, Asenath, and Polly, Molly or Mary. Nathan Leonard, the father, died October 10, 1813. He purchased the farm land in 1795, which was sold as a " Government claim." He built a log house, and with his family lived in it for three years, after which he built the present Joab Clift house in 1798, which was originally occupied as a public inn. The old signboard of this inn has been preserved by the family, and is now in the attic.

In the name of God amen. I Nathan Leonard of the town of Brutus in the County of Cayuga & State of New York, being weak in body, but of sound & perfect mind and memory and blessed be Almighty God for the same, considering the uncertainties of this mortal life do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, first, I reccommend my soul to God who gave it, and my body I commit to the earth to be interred with decency, and my direction is that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease, as consistently may be. And as for and concerning all my worldly estate I give and bequeath as followeth, Unto my beloved wife Amitta, my clock and base, one half of all my household furniture of what name or nature soever, for her own use. I also give devise and bequeath unto her during her natural life The use of one equal undivided moiety or half part of the dwelling house in which I now life, situate in the Town of Brutus aforesaid, and such part and so much of the stable and Barn situate West of the said house as will be sufficient to Stable one horse, & two Cows and to contain sufficient hay to keep said horse and Cows. And my mind and will is that my Executors hereafter named shall furnish and provide her with the use of two Cows during her natural life, and hay and pasture for said Cows and horse, and all necessaries such as cloathing, Victuals, drink, medical attendance, Washing, lodging and firewood, sufficient and proper for her age and station during her natural life. And also that my said Executors shall furnish and provide her so much wool and flax as she shall from time to time want to spin, in her own family during her life. And it is my mind and will And I do order direct and declare that the said several bequests, devises, legacies, previsions herein by me given and made unto and for my said Wife in manner aforesaid, are by me meant and Intended to be and shall by my said wife be accepted, and taken in full and entire lieu, bar, reccompence, discharge, and satisfaction of and for all and all manner of Claims, and demands whatever, which she at any time might or could have or which without provision & declaration, she could or might have at the time of my decease of, into, or out of any part or parts of my real or personal Estate, or as, or for, or on account of any dower or thirds, or right and title of dower or thirds, which she my said Wife might could or would in any manner have, claim, challenge, or demand out of, upon, or from, or in respect of any part of my estate or effects in any manner howsoever.
I also give and bequeath unto my daughter Asenath Leonard the other half of all my household furniture of what name and nature soever, and Twenty dollars a year with Interest after my decease, until the sum of Two hundred and fifty Dollars shall be paid of the said Two hundred and fifty Dollars with Interest after my decease to be paid on the day of her marriage, if it shall happen before the said sum of Two hundred and fifty Dollars shall be paid in the above Yearly payments. I also give and bequeath unto my son Cutler Leonard such horse as I shall die possesed of, and a Saddle and bridle and Watch and Seven hundred and fifty dollars in money, Five hundred Dollars of the same to be paid on the first Day of May next, and the other Two hundred and fifty Dollars, in one Year thereafter; with Interest from the said first day of May next, and I charge all my real Estate, subject and without prejudice to the above Estate of my Wife therein, with the payment of the above Legacies & Bequests And I authorise and empower my Executors herein after named & the survivor of them, at any time or times & from time to time to sell and dispose of all or any of the lands which I may die seised or possessed of, and with and out of the monies arising from any such sale, or sales to pay and satisfy the above legacies and bequests, and such other Debts which at my death shall be due and owing by me. And as to the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal whatsoever, which shall remain after payment of my debts, funeral expences, and the aforesaid legacies and bequests, I give devise and bequeath unto my Sons, Joseph Leonard, Nathan Leonard, Luther Leonard, Calvin Leonard, Bengamin Leonard, Ezra Leonard, Cutler Leonard, and my Daughters Molly Cross The Wife of Samuel Cross, and Asenath Leonard their Heirs and assigns forever equally to be divided between them, share and Share alike. And I nominate and appoint my said Sons Joseph Leonard and Cutler Leonard Executors of this my last will and testament. And I do hereby revoke all wills at any time heretofore by me made, and declare this only to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the Twenty Seventh Day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and twelve.

Whereas in and by my said last will and Testament, I have given and bequeathed to my son Cutler Leonard such horse as I shall die possesed of, I do hereby order and declare that my Will is that such Horse as I shall die possessed of, and also such Chaise and Chaise Harness as I shall die possessed of be given and I do hereby give and bequeath the said Horse, Chaise, and Harness to my beloved Wife, Amitta, and to my daughter Asenath, To Have and to hold to them and the survivor of them forever. And it is my desire that this my present Codicil be annexed to & made part of my last will and testament, to all intents and purposes.
