When but a child he moved with his parents to Laffyett Co., Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood.
On March 7, 1870, he was united in marriage to Evaline Sperry of Calamine, Laffyette Co., Wisconsin. To this union were born 14 children, 11 girls and 3 boys. Four daughters having preceded him in to the great beyond, his wife passed away 1 year ago.
In the year 1872 he moved to Nebraska taking a homestead 5 miles north-west of Seward where he experienced and endured the many hardships of a early pioneer life, having spent 57 years in this part of Nebraska.
He was a friend to everybody and always had friends where ever he went. He was a very kind husband and father, always at the bedside through sickness and death. The door to his home was always open to all, never turning anyone away who needed food or shelter.
He leaves to mourn their loss 10 children: Mrs. Martha Dyer, Elwood, Nebr.; Mrs. Louisa Closson, Keyterville, Mo.; Mr. Ben Knouse, Oskosh, Nebr.; Mrs. Amy Vanhoosen, Cairo, Nebr.; Mr. Charley Knouse, York, Nebr.; Mrs. Eunice Brown, Surprise, Nebr.; Mrs. Eva Walsh, Gresham, Nebr.; Mrs, Hattie Jacobson, Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs. Bessie Huff, Staplehurst, Nebr.; Mr. Robert Knouse, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two sisters, Mrs. Harriett Bohner and Mrs. Sarah Gurgerty, both of Belmont, Wis., and many grandchildren and a host of friends. - - Gresham Gazette
