He was the son of Frank and Anne Goodwin. He married Ellen Lavona Washburn (nee Sellers) on 26 March 1884 in Jefferson County, Alabama. He married second to Dora Diffey between 1911 and 1919. They are enumerated on the 1920 census in Jackson Parish, LA. , where for some reason Dora is listed as Ellen (John's first wife's name), but their ages are correct for who they are at 63 and 27. Also living with them is John's brother, Ike, and living next door are Joe (age 71) and Julia (age 58) Diffey, who are probably Dora's parents. In 1930 John and Dora are enumerated together in Jackson Parish, LA. and now have two children, Jodie and Clinton. John is 72 and Dora is 36. There was quite an age gap between them, which can make things confusing.
