Was probably the fifth child born to Elisha Walling, Sr. and Mary Blevins. He was born on 27 July 1751 in Lunenburg Co., Va.( Longhunter Page 118) and it is quite likely that he spent his early years in the Martinsville, Va. area. It is not known, however, if he ever accompanied his brother Elisha, Jr., the famed "Long Hunter", on hunting expeditions into Tennessee and Kentucky. James and Mary White Pugh were probably married about 1767 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. although no record of this marriage has yet been found.
Elisha, Sr., Joseph, and James Wallen are shown on the list of tithables in Pittsylvania Co., Va. by Peter Copeland on 17 July 1767. James Walling probably served in the Revolutionary War as a captain in the Va. militia.
He was living in Montgomery County, Va. in 1782-87 and appeared on tax lists of that county during that period with Elisha, Jr., John, Joseph, and William Walling.
Some researches have stated that James served in the Navy
on the Liberty, during the Revolutionary War. James Walling lived his entire life in Va. and did not move west to TN. with most of his children. On 26 March 1783, John and his family were living on Fox Creek Branch of the new river in Montgomery Co., Va. On 27 March 1785, James was ordered by the court to survey a wagon road from Good Spur to the Washington County line. He died in Montgomery Co. (now Grayson Co.), Va. on 28 March 1786 and is buried just south of the town of Grant in the Pugh Cemetery. James left a will dated 3 October 1785 in Montgomery Co., Va. It is not known when or where Mary died.

My ancestor, Doswell Rogers, signed James' Will as a witness. Look for the "R" which is his signature at the bottom left of the Will. Doswell's son, William, signed as a witness under Doswell.
William Rogers married first Rosannah Heard. Rosannah's brother, John Heard, married Susannah Walling. Later, William and Susannah married each other when John and Rosannah both died about the same time in Hawkins Co. TN.
Doswell named a son Elisha and William and Susannah named a son Elisha. Both Elishas being named for Elisha Walling.
Note: Had the DOB year of 1746. It was changed...
