He was commissioned a officer in the United States Army Air Force in WWII, was recipient of the Air Force Award and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions as a B-24 bombardier in combat in the Pacific and over Japan. He is survived by his son Richard Jesse (Mary) Rusmisel, Paso Robles CA; grandsons, Jason (Sarah), Dagan and Colin; great grandchildren Arwen, Emmett and Gabrielle; niece Sandy Lampe of San Diego CA and nephew Phil Welch Jr, Omaha NE.
