Roger Quince Smith was born to James Dekalb and Mary Elizabeth (Ross) Smith. He was raised in Coryell county and eventually met my great grandmother, Lillie Pearl Johnson. They were married in 1899 and had four wonderful children, Velma, Jimmie, Wayne and Ross. All except for Jimmie, had an impact on my early childhood. Through tales from my great grandmother, Roger worked as a cow hand on the XIT Ranch. Whether or not this was true, it certainly made for a good story and filled a young man's mind with visions of riding the range and adventure. Roger and Lillie settled down on a piece of land south of Athens, Texas.
Sadly, in 1922, Roger took his own life in an act of remorse.
