In 1793 James Sherman located in and gave his name to Sherman Hollow, in the east part of the town; he kept a tavern in his house and soon afterward built the first saw mill in La Fayette on Butternut Creek. From the time of his arrival the itinerant M. E. preachers found a welcome and a shelter at his home and a willing helper in the person of his wife, Lucina Sherman (note: error, Lucina was his daughter-in-law, married to James Jr.). They were the parents of Dr. J. De B. Sherman (note: Isaac deBlois Sherman, who was murdered in Arkansas in 1863), a prominent physician of Pompey Hill, and of Joseph Sherman, who served as justice of the peace from 1830 to 1840.

He served in the Continental Army (April 19, 1775, Lexington Alarm) in his father's co., Col. Pyncheon's Regiment. In May 1779 he was a Corporal in Capt. Shaw's Co., Col. Porter.
