Chief Petty Officer James Arthur Thomas, U. S. Navy (Retired), 85, of Baytown, TX was born March 30, 1924 in Simms, TX and passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009 in a Baytown hospital. He was a member of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church and retired from the Navy with 22 years of service. He was the Laboratory Director at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital from 1969 until 1986. He loved fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Saunders Thomas; mother, Grace Higbee; son, Kenneth R. Thomas; and brothers, S. M. Thomas Jr. and G. W. Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Marie Thomas of Baytown; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald W. and Norma Thomas of Fernley, NV and Greg and Cindy Thomas of Baytown; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jay Powers of Sparks, NV; brothers and sisters-in-law, W. R. and Priscilla Thomas of Jefferson, Gerald and Melba Thomas, Bobby and Velda Thomas and Johnny and Jimmie Lee Thomas, all of Simms; sister, Betty Hatley of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Rosie, Donnie, Sandy, Todd, Tracy, Eric and Brandon; and several great grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sand Hill Cemetery near Simms with Brother Dale Stinson officiating.
