J. B. Mitchell was born in London, England, in 1840, and immigrated to Canada as a boy. Later his parents moved to Kankakee, Illinois, where he must have met his wife Louise Marie Brosseau, born in Illinois ten years later. They were married in Illinois about 1865. Given his birth year, J. B. was prime material for the Civil War, but there is no record of his involvement. Nor is it clear when he came to Oklahoma, but his daughter Mary’s memoire states that it was soon after the 1891 opening. Mitchell did not homestead: he was a barber, not a farmer.
The couple had only two children that are known, one born 1872 and the other 1888, both girls. At the time of J.B.’s death, only the younger was still at home. It is not clear where his wife was in the next two decades, but in 1930 the census shows her living in Chandler with her younger daughter, the above mentioned Mary. Mrs. Mitchell died in 1938 and is buried in Oak Park.
