Sophie Ernestine Friederike Zarling was born in Wisbu, Kreis Regenwalde, Pomerania, to Christian Friederich Zarling and Dorothea Hoge. The family emigrated to the US in about 1854, and on 17 Jun 1856, Ernestine married August Friederich Wilhelm Bartelt. He is certainly also buried in the David Star cemetery, but does not have a headstone. The had three sons: Eduard August Gotthilf (b 1859, died in infancy), Heinrich August Wilhelm (b 1861), and Wilhelm Friedrich August (b 1863). When Ernestine died, her grandson Louis, one of the founders of Schmidt & Bartelt in Milwaukee, arranged her funeral.
