John D. McPherson Dead.
Mr. John D. McPherson, at one time one of the leading lawyers of the city, died quite suddenly this morning at his residence, at the head of 28th Street. For some time past he had been complaining, but his physicians did not anticipate such a serious turn to his illness. At 5 o’clock this morning he passed away. His son and two daughters were with him. He had been suffering with a complication of diseases and his sudden death is attributed to an attack of heart trouble.

Mr. McPherson retired from active work about six years ago, after winning many honors in a legal way and amassing quite a competency. He was a native of Loudoun County, Virginia and came from Quaker stock and at the time of his death was about seventy-nine years of age. For a number of years he has been living at his pretty estate, “Evermay,” adjoining Oak Hill Cemetery.

As a lawyer he had few equals and most of his work was before the United States Supreme Court. Shortly after the war, he, with Mr. James Mandeville Carlisle, became interested in the cotton claims and pushed them successfully. Later, with Mr. Carlisle, he was employed by the Spanish commission to prosecute the claims against the United States.

The work of the commission was completed about six or seven years ago, since which time Mr. McPherson has been living in retirement. He enjoyed a large circle of acquaintances among the leading legal lights of the country and was well known in this city.

He leaves a widow and six children, four daughters and two sons. His eldest son, Mr. Robert W. McPherson, is now a lawyer in this city. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, the interment being at Oak Hill Cemetery.
