Zachary D. "Big Red" Armstrong, age 17, resident of rural Shelby died unexpectedly Saturday October 10, 2009 in MedCentral Shelby Hospital.

Born February 17, 1992 in Shelby he had been a Shelby resident all his life. Zachary was a senior at Shelby High School, Class of 2010, where he served on the Senior Executive Committee and played baritone in the concert and marching band. He was a student of M. M. Utz School of Tae Kwon Do, where he currently held his dark blue belt and was just months away from attaining his black belt. He attended the Calvary Chapel Mansfield, where he was involved in the puppet ministry. Zachary was also a member of the 4-H Friends Club and looked forward to hunting with his father and loved all aspects of fireworks. Zachary was a tissue donor and had donated blood in the past.

Surviving are his parents Greg D. and Marla A. (Ousley) Armstrong of Shelby; one sister, Kaylyn Danielle Armstrong of Shelby; grandparents, Carol A. (Green) Armstrong of Shelby, Gary R. and Shelley Armstrong of Ontario, Franklin D. and Nannie R. (Hicks) Ousley of Plymouth; aunts and uncles, Shaun and Sharon Armstrong of Cleveland, Ryan and Smita Armstrong of Tucson, AZ, Drew Armstrong of Richmond, OH, Andrea Armstrong of Ontario, Jeffrey and Julie Ousley of Sherwood, OH, Shawn and Kevin Oney of Greenwich, Shelley and Gene Carey of Shelby, James Burkhart of Crestline and Vince Deal of Mansfield; cousins, Travis, Trevor and Tyler Burkhart, Joshua and Levi Oney, Amanda Aldrich, Ashley Berger, Jon Ousley, Shashi and Roana Armstrong, Taylor Deal, Trisha Carey and Danielle and Justin Jaboni; best friend, Andrew Ginter.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Johnny and Rhoda Ousley and Perry and Virgie Hicks, Jesse Green and Ethel Tooker; and one great-uncle, Jerry Green.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday October 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Pastor Bryan Schatzinger will officiate with interment to follow. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM and Wednesday one hour prior to funeral serivce. Memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Whippet Band.
