Son of Rev. John & Jane Baker Deaton

Half brother of Mary C. "Polly" Deaton Goodwin

-------------------------
Francis was the third son of Rev. John W. Deaton and his second wife, Jane Baker Deaton. He was a farmer marrying Annie Frances Eller of Roanoke Co, Va on 1 Sep 1849 and they had 10 children. He died at the CSA Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Va on 13 Jan 1865 apparently due to illness while serving in the Army of Northern Virginia (muster or enlistment records have not been found). By family stories, his wife Annie along with a servant girl and baby William A.F. Deaton traveled in the family wagon from Roanoke to Richmond but did not arrive before Francis had died. They brought him home to be buried in the Eller family cemetery but that cemetery was moved during the construction of I-81 in the 1960s. A memorial marker for Francis, Annie, and her second husband, John William Deaton, a cousin of Francis, was placed in Sherwood Burial Park, Salem, VA by the Deaton-Trout Family Reunion members as the original headstones were apparently lost during the highway construction.
