Barton was a son of Abner Cornelius and Susan McPherson of Blount/Jefferson County Alabama. He was married three times. First to Martha Jane Linton February 6, 1865 in Blount County Alabama. One child, Walter Lafayette, was born to them.

His second marriage is documented as follows: 1890 Cherokee Nation Census: Barton Cornelious,46; Annie,37. Annie is a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. Source: The 1890 Cherokee Nation Census Indian Territory, Volume I.

His third marriage was to Eva and they had one daughter, Annie.

Pushmata Co., Antlers, Ok: B. Cornelius, minister of M.R. Church of Antlers married Joe Gibson, age 21 of Antlers to Miss Nova Sauls, of Antlers, on October 8, 1919. Witnesses: M. Crownover and Mrs. B. Cornelius.

1920 Pushmata Co., ED 224, Sh 8A: B. Cornelius, 76, AL, minister of the gospel general work; Evaline, 30, wife, TX; Daughter (Annie), 9, AR.

During the Civil War Barton served in Company A, 7th Alabama Cavalry, Rucker's Brigade, Chalmers' Division. He spent time in a Confederate hospital in Texas: Dallas Morning News, dated March 19, 1905, page 15: "...The inmates and the management of the home regret the loss of Barton Cornelius, who took a discharge the present week. Mr. Cornelius proved himself worthy every one while here, and won many friends among the inmates and officials of the home. He served in Company A, Seventh Alabama Cavalry, Rucker's Brigade, Chalmer's Division. He was admitted into the home Sept. 20, 1904 from Daingerfield, Texas." He filed for Confederate pension from Phillips County, Arkansas in 1921, Warrant 6091.

Being a minister, he moved often: to Indian Territory, to Phillips County Arkansas, to Pushmata County Oklahoma and finally to Poinsett County Arkansas.

Barton is buried as "Rev. Barton Cornelius".

Arkansas Death Certificate #1633, Poinsett County. Barton Cornelius, age 85 years, 1 month, 7 days, died December 7, 1929 in Dobson Township, Poinsett County. He was married. Surviving wife Eva. Minister. Father Abner Cornelius; Mother Susan McPherson. Buried in Holloway Cemetery.

Note: After the death of Barton, his widow, Eva, married B.F. Long July 7, 1929 in Jackson County, Arkansas. They resided in Pitts, Poinsett County.
