Mrs. Mary Maggie Matthews Griffith, wife of Dr. R. Sumter Griffith, of 556 North Delphine Avenue, died early this morning at the University of Virginia Hospital following an illness of several months.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Basic Methodist Church, of which she was a member, conducted by the Rev. Edgar G. Hill, pastor of the church, and the Rev. M. L. Fearnow, of Washington, D. C., and the Rev. Walter S. Thomas, of Greenville, former pastors. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs. Griffith was a daughter of the late Taylor M. and Mrs. Annie E. Foster Matthews, and was born February 13, 1881, in Nelson County. She lived there until her marriage to Dr. Griffith on Feburary 18, 1914, and had lived at their Delphine Avenue home here since that time.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Miss Mary Virginia Griffith, of Waynesboro; a son, Matthews A. Griffith, of Richmond and Waynesboro; a stepson, W. Louis Griffith, of Quincy, Fla.; a granddaughter, Miss Beverley Allen Griffith, of Richmond; a sister, Miss Mantie Matthews, of Waynesboro; three nieces and three nephews, children of Mrs. Griffith's only brother, the late Eddie L. Matthews, of Nelson County and Waynesboro.
Active pallbearers will be six members of the medical profession in the area. Honorary pallbearers will include J. E. Wood, Sam. H. Croft, H. Ervine Woods, Morris Anderson, John W. Brown, Arthur E. Engman, Robert S. Foster, H. Lloyd Brown, O. P. Young, Robert S. Boyd, L. C. Dawson, Wallace Dodd, and W. E. Moore.
