Cynthia married publisher Charles E. Leonard in Buffalo, New York, on October 10, 1852. Shortly after their marriage the moved to Michigan. They became parents of seven children born in Michigan, Iowa, and Chicago, Illinois: Ida Kate, Jennie Harriet, Leona Frederica "Nannie", Helen Louise "Nellie", Susan Beatrice, Samuel Jarvis and Emma Blanche.
Their daughter Nellie was the famous actress Lillian Russell.
Cynthia was enumerated on the 1900 U.S. Census of Manhattan, New York, as a widowed mother-in-law in the home of Edward and Ida K. Schultz.

Mrs. Charles E. Leonard Passes Away at Home of Her Daughter in Rutherford.
Mrs. Charles E. Leonard, the mother of Mrs. Edward Schultze, of 15 Newell Avenue, Rutherford, and of Lillian Russell, the actress, died at the home of her daughter in Rutherford this morning. Mrs. Leonard was in her eighty-first year and death was due to general debility, owing to her advanced years. She had lived in Rutherford with Mrs. Schultze for a number of years and was well-known and highly respected.
Besides Mrs. Schultze and Miss Russell, Mrs. Leonard leaves three other married daughters. The funeral, for which no arrangements have as yet been made, will be private, as will be the internment.
