Obituary for John Mahaffey:
J. Mahaffey Dies, Rites Wednesday
John G. Mahaffey, retired Chicago and North Western railroad conductor, died of a heart attack at 6:20 Sunday evening. He had been ill since 1946.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p. m., Wednesday at the Pfaff Funeral Home, with the Rev. M. A. Kampfe officiating. Interment will be in the Woodville cemetery.
A native of Urchivella, Ohio, John Gilmore Mahaffey was born Oct. 20, 1875. Left an orphan when only four days old, he was reared in the home of the Rev. Charles Gutensohn in Ohio. During his early years, he farmed for some time near Springfield, Minn., and it was there that he married Emma Schwarzrock on Oct. 24, 1899. They located in Waseca and Mr. Mahaffey began his work with the railroad which continued for 30 years until his retirement in 1944. Mrs. Mahaffey died in 1948.
Mr. Mahaffey was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Joe Roper (Ella) and Mrs. Sam Broscoff (Florence), both of Waseca, and two sons, Arno Mahaffey of Isanti, and Jerome Mahaffey, St. Charles. He also leaves eight grandchildren and a foster brother, Peter Gutensohn of St. Paul.
