Willard James Stevens, 69, of 1001 E. 8th, Atlantic, Iowa died after a brief illness Oct. 9 at St. Josephs Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services were held at the Berthusen-Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Harold Peterson officiating. Interment was at the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

Stevens was born August 15, 1906, at Hastings, Iowa, the son of Jessie J. Stevens and Minnie (Sapingfield) Stevens.

He married Laura Ackart Sept. 4, 1973 at Avoca, Iowa. He worked in the Maintenance Department for the Northern Natural Gas Company.

Stevens was affiliated with the United Church of Avoca and the Avoca American Legion. He also served in WWII.

Survivors include: his wife, one son: Gary Stevens of Avoca; 2 grandchildren; one brother: Max of Barstow, Calif.; three sisters: Mrs. Carl (Laura) Thompson of Council Bluffs; Mrs. William (Margaret) Johnson, of Walnut; and Mrs. Clark (Doris) Brindley of Richmond, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, (Doris Babbitt), 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
