Mary Martha Akins

Mary Martha (Barr) Akins, 77, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Beacon Ridge, Indiana, Pa. The daughter of Ernest and Martha (Holby) Barr, she was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Blairsville.
Mrs. Akins attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Free Methodist Church, Blairsville. She was a member of American Legion Post No. 0407 Auxiliary and the VFW Post No. 5821 Auxiliary.
Mrs. Akins lived her entire life in Blairsville and was employed by Torrance State Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1996. She enjoyed sitting on her porch at home.
Surviving are two sons, David, and wife Patty, Blairsville, and William, and wife Diana, Derry; a daughter, Brenda Lear and husband Dan, Blairsville; eight grandchildren, James Lear, Eli Akins, Jason Scott Lear, Michael Akins, Jamie Copney, Heidi Jack, Kelli Akins and Billijo Akins; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Rishor, Hampton, Va., and Donna Boyer, Derry.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harry "Hank" Akins on Aug. 29, 2002.
Friends were received at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville, where funeral services were held Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. John McMannus and Rev. Richard McClurg co-officiating.
Interment was in Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville.
