Lost his father, Simeon Hammond Martin, when only one and a half (1½) years old, when his father had the misfortune to lose his life in attempting to swim from the sabotaged ship to shore, witnessed by father's friend, Major Josiah Tilden on 4 August 1863 while the river boat "Ruth" was plying the waters of Mississippi River, journeying to Vicksburg, Mississippi with a $2.6 million payroll for Gen U S GRANT and his Union troops, after their victorious major battle, providing Union forces total control over the Mississippi river traffic.
He and sister "Nellie" were raised by their mother "Jennie" in Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois until he graduated from his father's Alma Mater, Knox College about 1880 removing then to Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri with mother, then to Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri about nine years later. He married L. P. Cunningham's first born daughter in Carthage, with Hough Family History having them living in Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, he owning; Blacksmiths and Machinists Supples before 1896 move to Dallas, Dallas County, Texas establishing Martin Stationary Company in 1907. They had four children, three sons to adulthood. His family members would come visit from time to time. His mother "Jennie" died while visiting him in Dallas, 21 March 1919.

Will Be Buried Monday
H B Martin, 61 years old, of 4127 Live Oak street, founder of the Martin Stationary Company, died Saturday at his honme. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Monday afternon at the residence with burisl in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr Martin was a native of Galesburg, Ill, and before movng to Dalas lived there and in Kansas City and Carthage, Mo. Coming here about thrty years ago, he traveled for a time and in 1907 founded his present business. He was an honorary member of the Texas Bar Assocciation.
Mr Martin is survived by his wife, three sons, E H, R C, and Charles Martin, all of Dallas, and a sister, Mrs J F Boyd of Carthage, Mo.
