"The death of Joseph Spencer Norris last Saturday was a sad climax to the fire in Lotus on the night of Nov. 27th, when the store and home of Mrs. Elizabeth Uhlenkamp were totally destroyed. Mr. Norris went to the assistance of Mrs. Uhlenkamp and it is now thought that through excitement and overexertion he suffered a stroke of paralysis, in falling from the porch of the burning building. Dr. Joseph Wrenn was called an pronounced Mr. Norris's condition critical from the first, the left side was completely paralized, and he remained in a semi-conscious condition.
Mr. Norris was a native of Missouri, seventy years of age, and a pioneer of this county coming to Lotus, then Uniontown in 1852, where he has since resided, following ranching and blacksmithing. In 1866 he was married to Miss Josephine Blundell, who survives him as does his daughter, Mrs. Ralph Colwell of Coloma. His son, Albert Norris, passed away in October after long suffering, and the father has followed his only son into the realm of mystery. Albert, George and Elmer Colwell are grandsons of the deceased and he leaves a wide circle of friends to sorrow with those so sadly bereaved.
Funeral services were from the family home at Lotus last Monday, under the auspices of Acacia Lodge No. 92 F. & A. M. of which he had long been a member, and was the only fraternity to which he had ever belonged. Rev. George Beattie, of Georgetown, conducted the services, assisted by the Coloma choir and interment was in the Lotus Cemetery beside his father. The funeral was largely attended by friends and acquaintances from all sections of the county, including a delegation from this city."
