CHATHAM — Herbert Francis Bernard,formerly of Wellesley and Wayland, he had recently moved to his Chatham home. He had been a member of the Wellesley Men's Club, Wellesley, Brae Burn, and Eastwood Ho Country clubs. He was a longtime active member of the Stage Harbor Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Friends of Chatham Waterways.

Mr. Bernard was born in Boston and brought up in Newton Centre, where he attended schools. He was a graduate of Cornell University in 1943, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was a lifetime member of the Cornell Club of New England.

His career began at Dewey and Almy. He then spent 25 years with the Factory Mutual Insurance Companies, ending his working career as vice president in charge of European expansion. He traveled extensively through Ireland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and particularly enjoyed his European friends whom he entertained often in his Chatham and Wellesley homes.

His other interests were gardening, sailing and his boat the Bally Hoo.

Herbert was married for 58 years to the former Gloria Gould of Brookline and they were blessed by the love of two children, Elizabeth B. Love of Wayland and David G. Bernard of Southborough. Of special joy to Herbert were his three grandchildren, Andrew MacBride Love Jr. of Wayland, David Gould Bernard Jr. and Christine Elizabeth Bernard of Southborough.

Visiting hours will be at the J.S. Waterman & Sons & Waring Funeral Home, 592 Washington St., Wellesley, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Zepherin Church, 99 Main St., Wayland on Friday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m.
