DEATH OF JUDGE ANGELL - It is our melancholy duty to record the death of W. H. Angell, Probate Judge for this county. The sad event occurred at his residence in this city on Thursday Sept 25th., about 6 o'clock P.M. his disease was congestion of the brain. Judge Angell was attending to his duties as usual up to Sabbath morning last. after breakfast he complained of feeling unwell and in a short time he experienced the pangs of an attack similar to that which befel the unfortunate gentlemen a few months ago when he had such a narrow escape from death. He suffered terribly most of hte time for five days, but at intervals was conscious of his condition and imparted to the loved ones around him the sad information that he was approaching his end. Everything possible was done for him by physician and friends, but in his case, death seemed almost to have been a forgone conclusion from the moment that the dread disease attacked him. Judge Angell was born at Moores [sic], Lake Champlain New York, in 1831. He moved westward at the early age of 18 arriving in San Francisco in 1849. Some years afterwards he settled in Shasta County, where he was for a long time connected with the Sheriff's office, and was held in high esteem by all the old residents of that section, as well as those with whom he was brought in contact in social life. He was married in 1861 and removed to Owyhee five years later. Two of his children died since his residence here and his wife and daughter still survive him. During a residence of nearly seventeen years in this city the deceased filled various positions of trust and responsibility. He had a mind that was well adapted to the discharge of duties pertaining to public business, was familiar with accounts and his services were frequently brought into requisition in connection with county matters. He possessed an intimate knowledge of the duties pertaining to every office in the county, nearly all of which including Assessor and Commissioner he filled at different times. At the election held here one year ago he was chosen Probate Judge receiving a heavier vote than any other candidate for public office in the county. He was not only thoroughly competent to discharge the duties of the several positions which he filled but he performed the same in such a manner as to leave a most favorable impression upon all with whom he was brought in contact. Through courteous and affable deportment both in public and private life he made hosts of friends, by all of whom his memory will be cherished and his name venerated. Our community could ill afford to spare such a man as Judge Angell at the present time, while the blow to his afflicted family comes with a much greater force. They have the sympathies of the whole community in their melancholy bereavement. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon and was largely attended. He was buried under the auspice of Owyhee Lodge A. F. and A. M. of which he was a devoted and consistent member, and with the performance of the last sad rites to a departed brother and worthy citizen the whole community feel that a good man has gone and on the score of public usefulness he cannot be replaced.
