Ellen was born in Scotland in 1850, the daughter of David & Mary Kennedy. Sometime in the late 1860's she was married to Peter Alexander and then immigrated to the USA They originally settled in the Gilbertville, Massachusetts and had their first five children: Samuel Alexander, John Alexander, Ida M. Alexander, David Alexander, and Joseph Nelson Alexander.
The family then left Gilbertville in 1877 and moved to Hanover, Illinois where the other four children were born: George R. Alexander, Stephen Alexander, Louis Alexander, and Peter Alexander.
In 1892 the family moved to Clinton, Michigan and lived there until Ellen died in 1896. She was buried in the Clinton Cemetery; present day Riverside Cemetery.
