OBITUARY

THE CHARITON LEADER
Chariton, Iowa
November 26, 1996

Betty Ilene Force was born Aug. 7, 1928, near the rolling hills of southern Iowa near Belinda, the daughter of Keith and Leone Bingaman. Betty grew in the warmth of a community which knows the land, and was well steeped in the tradition, knowledge, and stoic ways of an Iowa farm girl.

After graduating from Chariton High School in 1946, she worked for a while at Combs Advertising, until she met the man of her life, Paul Force.

She then settled with Paul in Russell, devoting her time to church, family, and raising four children: Peggy, Bob, Dick and Debby.

When the children were able to function on their own, Betty took a job working for the First State Bank, and remained one of their finest assets for twenty years. Though busy, her priorities of church and family never waned, in fact, they expanded with the births of her grandchildren: Jennifer, Meredith, Jessica, Keith Paul, Amber, Catherine, Kip and Rachel.

Betty always had the time to resolve all the seemingly endless questions on child-rearing and cooking, plied by both daughters and sons. All were given assistance which only her years of experience could afford.

Betty is survived by her husband, four children, eight grandchildren and one brother, but more than this, she is survived by everyone she touched in this life.

The light from a candle shines, burns to dim and is gone. Yet, the heat of burning candle, in touching others, sparks a flame and the illumination multiplies many times that of the original flame. Such was the life of Betty Ilene Force, as her heat, which was love, touched others around her, and even in her passing, the illumination is greater than when she came into this life.

Betty departed this life on Nov. 13, 1996, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of sixty-eight.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov 16, 1996, at the Faith United Methodist Church in Russell. Pastor Larry Prosser officiated. Burial was in the Russell Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Bob Force, Dick Force, Glen Abrahamson, Bud Moody, Roger Pierce, Victor Phippen and Jim Andrews. Memorials may be given in her name to the Faith United Methodist Church.
