A farmer, he was the son of Anderson Hoots and Nancy Catherine Gough; married 1) Mary Elizabeth Long 12 April 1866, 2) Nancy Catherine Reavis 26 March 1874, and 3) Sarah E. "Sallie" Burgess 2 February 1897. Children of John and Mary Long: Sarah J., Nathan R. and John F. Hoots.
Children of John and Nancy Reavis: Louisa Victoria, Rebecca Elizabeth, Lillie Etta, James Marion, Charlie Lee, Wiley Franklin, Nancy Catherine, William Ransom and Miles Sanford Hoots. Children of John and Sarah Burgess: Winnie Jane and George A. Hoots.
