Merhl was born March 8, 1925 in Walkersville a son of Oscar Henry and Hattie Marshall Rice and was the husband of Beatrice Viola Gilbert Rice who he married February 6, 1948

Merhl was a veteran of WW II. He served with the US Army in the South Pacific.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a member of the AMVETS Post #2 of Frederick.
Merhl retired in 1987 from Fort Detrick where he had been an animal caretaker for USAMRIID.

In addition to his wife he was survived by a son and daughter, Ronald Lee Rice of Mountaindale and Shirley Lorraine Metz and husband Charles, also of Mountaindale, four grand children, Laura Pennington and husband Phillip, Charles W. Metz Jr. and wfe Becky, and Becky M. and Molly A.Rice and seven great grand children.

Merhl was a brother to the following siblings, Bertha Irene Eaton, Ellis "Ira" Rice, Garnett Leo Rice, Delmas Rice and Lenora Hartman Lassiter.
