James Jacquelin Daniel was born August 11, 1830, (this birth date is approved per UDC application documents) in Columbia, Richland County, SC and died in Jacksonville, Duval County, FL.

He raised Co. "A" of the Second Florida Infantry, Confederate States Army, which was known as the "St. Johns Grays". This company was one of the best drilled in the command and later became Co. "G" and he was made Colonel.

His company participated in the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, and also fought in battles around Richmond, Yorktown and Williamsburg. Due to failing health, he returned to Florda. However, he took command of the Confederate forces at the Battle of Natural Bridge and also fought in the Battle of Olustee. He was mustered out April 9, 1865.
