David Samuel Stanfield was born on July 5, 1815, in Greene County, Tennessee, the son of David and Elizabeth Beals Stanfield. He later moved to Marshall County, Iowa.
In April 1858, the Iowa River overflowed its banks, and the waters didn't recede until September. On July 8, David had gone to fish in a small boat at the dam near the Benson Sawmill east of Union, Iowa. The boat drifted too near the falling sheet of water and went over. David drowned in the swollen waters.

"July 1858, the first tragic accident of record was the death by drowning of David S. Stanfield, husband of Jane Baldwin-Stanfield. He was fishing in a small boat at Benson's Mill dam when it drifted too near the falling sheet of water and went over. Funeral was at Bangor." Information from Mary (Hammill) Rund, Member #48585237.
