"John Fike was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, October 30th, 1822. Died September 12th, 1905. Age 82 years, 10 months and 12 days.
He accompanied his parents to Ohio in 1834 at the age of 12 years. Being a resident of Wayne county until the time of his death, residing in Reedsburg for the last 21 years.
He was united in marriage to Susanna Showalter in 1843. To this union 9 children were born of which 4 children and the mother passed away. He was re-married to Saba Buchwalter. To this union no children were born. She preceded him to the better world seven years before.
Five children yet survive him, three sons and two daughters, 15 grand children and 10 great grand children. He was a faithful member of the German Baptist church for over 50 years also the last survivor of his father's family of eight children.
Mr Fike was a kind, devoted and loving father and as a neighbor deserves the highest praise in his upright, honest, christian character, and can truly say 'earth's loss is heaven's gain.'
The children desire to thank the neighbors and friends for their assistance during the sickness and deather of their father."
