The following was posted by Ann Khulenberg: lore handed down by Mary Polly, Alfred's daughter, Joel's sister:
"Mary Polly told that 2 union soldiers on horse back, rode up to the house. They told Alfred that he and his son would have to join the service. When he refused, He and Joel who was 14 or 15 years old at the time (they said) where then forced onto horses and took off to join the Union Army. Neither was ever seen or heard from again."

It was believed that Joel was taken prisoner and died in 1864. His father died of disease in 1861, indicating that Joel was forced into the service when he was 13 to 14 yrs old.

NOTE: Based on information passed down from Joel's sister, the family did not know the date Joel was killed/died as prisoner, or where. The death date shown in this memorial is consistently used in various family trees and is the only Civil War burial found for a Joel C. Ross and appears to be for this person.
